Undergraduate Programs

Admission of New Freshmen:

Preparation for college Secondary school students planning to apply for admission to La Sierra University are urged to consider the following:
  1. A prospective student should complete the graduation requirements of the secondary school program with a grade point average of 2.50 or above. (Under certain conditions students with a secondary school grade point average below 2.50 may be admitted provisionally, depending on appropriate placement test scores, with appropriate restrictions.) It is strongly recommended that the college preparatory program include, with grades of C (2.00) or above, the following:

    • English, 40 semester periods
    • Mathematics, 30 semester periods including Algebra Iⅈ and Geometry or Trigonometry or Pre-Calculus
    • Health, 5 semester periods
    • Science, 30 semester periods including Biology, Chemistry and Physics
    • Computer Literacy and Keyboard Skills, 10 semester periods
    • Foreign Language, 20 semester periods of the same language
    • Social Studies, 20 semester periods including American and World History
    • Religion, 10 semester periods per year of attendance at a Seventh-day Adventist secondary school

Prospective students lacking the recommended secondary preparation in foreign language, health, or laboratory science will be required to include designated coursework in their University Studies (general education) program while at the University. Completion of the secondary school program as outlined above will allow a greater flexibility in one’s University experience and increase the likelihood of students scoring well on placement examinations.

  2. La Sierra University adheres to the graduation requirements for regionally accredited secondary schools. Applicants who have completed their secondary work in an unaccredited or non-regionally accredited institution, or a non-United States institution where accreditation cannot be confirmed, may be asked to write the GED. (See the High School Equivalency section below.)

  3. Applicants who completed secondary school outside the United States must present high school completion as outlined by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers (AACRAO) guidelines for the particular country.

  4. Applicants who have completed their high school education in a home school setting must submit either a transcript from a regionally accredited home school program or present the results of the General Educational Development (GED) examinations (See the High School Equivalency section below).

  5. A prospective freshman student must take the American College Test (ACT) and/or the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and request the results be sent to the University. (Write in the University’s code #4380 on the test at the time it is taken.) It is expected that applicants will have taken either the ACT or the SAT during the junior or senior year of secondary school. Accepted applicants who have not previously taken these tests must make arrangements to take them and/or appropriate placement tests at the La Sierra University Learning Support & Testing Center prior to enrollment.

  6. Proficiency in reading, English usage, mathematics and computer literacy is expected and can usually be acquired by fulfilling the recommended secondary English, math, and computer literacy requirements above. ACT or SAT test scores at or above the 50th percentile on the English/verbal and math sections indicate the expected proficiency in reading, English usage, and mathematics. Accepted applicants failing to achieve at least the 50th percentile will be required to take additional placement tests prior to enrollment (contact Learning Support & Testing Center) and subsequent remedial work may be required which must be completed within 12 calendar months of initial enrollment. (See “Remedial courses” below and in the Academic Policies and Practices section of this BULLETIN for restrictions.) Computer information retrieval will be required in UNST 101.

Admission of Returning Students:

A returning student who wishes to resume studies at the University after an absence of one calender year or more must reapply, submit transcripts from any school attended since attending La Sierra University, and submit recent recommendations as required by the Office of Admissions. If the returning student has been gone less than one calendar year, the student must submit a reapplication statement (which is available at the Admissions Office) and transcripts from any school attended since attending La Sierra University. Returning students are subject to the requirements of the BULLETIN in effect at or after the time of reentry. A student who has been discontinued from the University for reasons of professional or academic behavior will need to reapply (and to conform to any conditions which have been spelled out) to be considered by the Undergraduate Admissions Committee. A student who has been “Academically Disqualified” a second time or discontinued permanently will not be readmitted to the University.

Transfer Students:

In addition to following all regular requirements for consideration for admission, an applicant for undergraduate admission by transfer from another college or university must file with the Office of Admissions complete official transcripts of all studies taken at both secondary and postsecondary levels. A cumulative grade point average of C (2.00) is required on all college level courses. A student submitting less than 12 quarter units of transferable coursework is considered as a new freshman. ACT/SAT scores and/or in-house testing for placement is required from transfer students who have not completed Freshman English and College Algebra. If remedial courses are required, they must be completed within 12 calendar months of a student’s first enrollment.
